I've been just where you are now
And it's so frustrating, isn't it?
I've been in this fabulous business for 30 years now and, for most of that time, I tried everything you could think of to earn a living while trying to help as many people as possbile to look and feel fabulous. I failed miserably. I just didn't have a clue. I had all the props though!
- over 180 colour analysis drapes
- a fancy stand
- a ridiculously expensive full-length mirror
- the ubiquitous tape measure (I must have been mad!)
- enough leaflets to paper someone's front room
- masses of business cards
I'd spent a small fortune on this little lot. After all, in those days you couldn't just run off some leaflets or business cards on a computer - this was way before that! I'd shelled out hundreds of pounds to have them designed, set, printed (whatever it is that print shops do).
But do you know what?
These props proved to be about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Because none of this brought me any clients.
And let's be real here, if you don't have any clients, you don't have a business, and all the skills and props in the world are not going to make you a single penny!
It's absolutely fine and dandy
being a world expert in image and style
but it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot
if you haven't any clients

But to do any of this, you need clients. After all, you can only practise on your friends and family for so long before you start to run out of volunteers.
But where on earth do you FIND OUT how to get more clients?
There are loads of books
out there which all concentrate on the fundamental skills rather than
how to make money. They don't tell you about how
to find clients and
they certainly don't tell you what to do with them
once you have some.
Who do you go to?
Who is really ready to share what they know?
- Hardly anybody, actually, and I speak from personal experience
So what are you going to do? Are you going to give up?
- No, no, no - you don't have to do that at all. Not any more.
- I can help you. I can definitely help you.
But before I do...
Let me tell you what I tried
For years and years and probably like you, I didn't have anyone to ask.
Every consultant I knew was far too busy protecting what they knew from
people like me. They saw me as the competition, someone likely to pinch
their ideas or, worse, pinch their clients!
No-one would tell me anything and the only available training courses were solely about how to use the colour drapes, or how to measure someone to within an inch of their life, or how to disguise fat thighs or a small bosom. I already knew all that and it was all proving to be utterly useless without someone to practise on.
What I needed desperately was some help in how to find customers. But there was no-one there.
I felt like I was drowning in a sea of no information. And, I hate to admit it, but on several occasions I actually gave up and went back to the day job.
Horrid, horrid days.
Desperation kicks in
Then in sheer desperation, 21 years ago, I decided to get in touch with the amazing image consultant who had originally encouraged me to set up my own image business. I was utterly terrified about asking for help but somehow managed to ask if I could follow her around for a couple of days.
I thought this would be a great way to get answers to all those questions that I'd got no-one else to ask!
I reckoned that I would easily learn how she got new clients, how she earned more money from her existing clients, and how she had built an excrutiatingly successful image business helping people to get what they want from life.
- You see, I have always believed that what you wear tells other people how to treat you, and that we can show our clients how to get what they want from life by changing what they wear
- Because this will change how they think about themselves and how other people perceive them, their confidence will grow and the world then becomes their oyster
- This is really powerful, life-changing stuff and I still love showing this to my clients even after all these years
Well, this very successful image consultant listened calmly to my request and then, just as calmly, quoted me GBP 1,100 for two days.
Now this was back in 1989 when that amount of money was worth a heck of a lot more than it sounds even now! Good grief. I hadn't a clue where to find that kind of money or whether this was even a reasonable amount to pay for personal mentoring.
I did something extremely daft
I went to someone who seemed to me at the time to be in an authoritative position and asked his opinion.
He told me that this amount was outrageous and that there must be plenty of other ways to discover how to find new clients. He suggested that I should read every book available about sales and marketing, and perhaps consider a local government-funded course. I remember vividly that he also lectured me on the wisdom of even attempting to follow my dream, ending his sermon with those immortal words, "Don't you think you ought to go and find a real job?"
- I was young
- I listened to him because he was an 'authority' figure
- I didn't question his logic
- and consequently I turned down the consultant's offer
What a twit I was!
If only I'd spent a mere two days with that consultant, I'd have turned my business around in a matter of weeks.
How do I know that?
Because she ended up with an incredibly successful business, working with all sorts of amazing people, consulting for some of the major 'names' in the land, and travelling the world while doing it!
The moral of this story?
Well, there are two:
- Don't listen to people who haven't a clue what YOU're talking about!
- Follow your gut feeling - because it's always right!
This chap didn't understand anything outside his own little world of corporate life - you know, get up and go to work on a Monday morning, come home, eat your tea, go to bed, get up and go to work on a Tuesday... etc. Sorry, but for me, this is (and was literally for many years) my worst nightmare.
My guess is that your family and friends most probably just don't 'get' what you're trying to do and, frankly, they never will so there's no point asking them for help or advice.
- You need access to people who DO understand
- who've been where you are and have fought their way up to running a successful business
- You need to be able to run your 'daft' ideas past the only people who can understand
- and who really, really want to help
But I digress...
Let me explain how I finally found someone who could help.
10 more years of stumbling around
So, for the next 10 years I stumbled around in the dark, trying this, that and the other, giving my valuable services away for next to nothing to a mere handful of clients, getting more and more frustrated, and going back to the corporate world more times than I can count just so that I could pay the bills.
Finally I get a break
But finally in 1999, the opportunity came to spend an entire summer working with a brilliant image consultant who showed me how to tailor my business to what worked for me, and how not to blindly copy what everyone else was doing.
That experience was the turning point for me and for my business
It opened up new horizons and possibilities that I would never have thought of myself. It also led to some great reciprocal business deals that I would never have fallen over witthout his guidance.
- I found new clients when I wanted them
- I knew exaclty how to keep my existing clients happily paying me money year after year
- Finally I had a very strong image business and I was making good money
It's so easy to start up your business when you know how
I soon had a whole raft of clients, eagerly wanting more of my services and happily recommending me to all their friends.
Why was it so simple?
Because I already knew exactly what would work and what wouldn't. And, my goodness me, that gives you immense confidence right from the start.
